March 23 (Monday)
FIRST TRIP Dad arrived at 4:20 PM temp 42 degrees calm - overcast trying to snow or rain. Stew for dinner at 6:30 P.M. After dinner started chopping ice off of the road up the hill. It is 2" to 3" thick. 41 degrees at 9:30 PM broken clds S.W wind. Mom's supper stew was real good.

March 24 (Tuesday)
34 degrees at 7:30 A.M. cloudy, calm. Some snow 1" on grd. HIgh wind about 3:30 a.m. Mac J. came out about 10 A.M. We played crib & had bean soup for lunch. About 3" of snow when Mac left at 1:45 P.M. left word in for Phil not to come out this evening and to call Duane and tell him not to come on Wednesday. 35 degrees at 3 P.M. Washed windows swept all floors carried in a supply of wood. Assembled new Bernzamatic Lantern, my Christmas gift from Lin Duane & Roger will try it tonite 32 degrees at 7 P.M. 32 degrees at 9 P.M.

March 25 (Wednesday)
28 degrees at at 7:30 A.M, calm, scattered clds. Got to top of hill on 1st try about 10:30 A.M leaving now at 11:30 A.M. 38 degrees cldy wind coming up hope I make it up the hill again.

April 25 (Saturday)
2nd trip 1970 Arrived at 2:10 P.M. cloudy. windy temp 43 degrees place looks o.k. 5-PM 40 degrees trying to snow 37 degrees at 10 P.M. (DST)

April 26 (Sunday)
34 degrees at 7-AM calm, cloudy, starting to snow lightly Duane, Lin, & Bob Twujeck & Roger came at 10:45 A.M.

They started home at 7:05 P.M. but by that time we had 4' of snow. put chains on but lost one on the hill so I pulled them up with the pickup, they got to Marks' gate about 8:40 I think. I went as far as the Liverpool breaking trail. 34 degrees at 9:15 P.M. snowing litely.

April 27 (Monday)
34 degrees at 7:15 A.M. Heavy fog & lite snow, calm. about 6" of snow on the ground, heavy & wet. 44 degrees at 12 noon chopped wood, burnt one pile of limbs etc Found Duanes chain near top of hill.
40 degrees at 6 P.M. Soup for dinner. 36 degrees at 10 P.M. still snowing.

April 28 (Tuesday)
33 degrees at 8 P.M. heavy overcast, calm, lite snow. Fired the other brush pile, ran the truck up the hill, no problem, 3" of new snow 36 degrees at 12 noon, still snowing, real fine snow.

Decided at 3 P.M. to head for home, snowing & drifting. 35 degrees at 3:30 P.M., still snowing, I'm on my way

May 7 (Thursday)
Dad in at 5:15 P.M. 50 degrees overcast calm, no snow road rather wet. Came by way of Boulder, stopped there to license the jeep. $11.01 includes $2 for registration papers. license No. 51-1832

Phil, Karen, Bruce & the baby came out about 6:45 P.M. left for home at 9 P.M., temp 46 degrees

May 8 (Friday)
42 degrees at 6: A.M. cldy, calm, Drove up to the west gate about 10 A.M. Wired up the new gate going into the west "80" also wired up the gate going down ohio gulch both gates were open. Went into Helena at 11:15 A.M. called Virginia & Mac Johnson./ They were leaving for Butte for the weekend. Called Florence Geary and went up and visited for an hour or so. Bill is working afternoons had some time off for the Vigilante Day Parade. I got back to the H.S about 2:45 P.M. 54 degrees at 5 P.M. overcast & some wind. Started cleaning up the garden. 56 degrees at 5:30 PM Sun is shining, scattered clouds. 44 degrees at 7:30 P.M. clear sky calm.

May 9 (Saturday)
44 degrees at 7:15 A.M. overcast fog, calm lite snow during the nite. Measured up the way the plywood is laid in the kitchen, so as to lay the hard board flooring without too many common joints. Raked & filled the garden, its ready to spade or rototill. Intercepted four motorbikers. Mr. Eric Olstad and three others. He wondered if Phil was up here. 58 degrees at 5 P.M. clear & calm, real nice
Phil & boys plus a friend of theirs came about 6:30 P.M. left about 6:30 P.M. 50 degrees at 8:30 P.M. some scattered clouds.

May 10 (Sunday)
40 degrees at 8 A.M. clear & calm, a few clds starting to show on the McClellan horizon. Saw the first of the season (up here) gophers up in the corner SE of the house.
52 degrees at 12 noon, looks like a storm, heavy clouds moving in.
Phil & the boys, including Kevin, came out about 2:15 P.M. left at 4:30 P.M. It is raining quite hard just now look like it will last for some time, had a few showers during the day. 45 degrees at 4:30 P.M. Still raining at 5:30 P.M. 40 degrees at 10 P.M. quit raining about 9 P.M.

May 11 (Monday)
36 degrees at 7 AM cloudy, stormy some wind. Think I'll go back today the weather report isn't too good.
Leaving for home at 12:30 P.M. sun came out about 10 A.M. temp now 48 degrees Windy, clouding up. AT LEAST IT DID NOT SNOW THIS TRIP.

May 16 (Saturday)
Mom & Dad in at 4:30 P.M. from Missoula. Clear calm temperature 80 degrees
Karen, Phil & baby came out about 8 P.M. We played pinochle until about 11 P.M. when they left for home. 54 degrees at 11 P.M. moon-lite.

May 17 (Sunday)
56 degrees at 7 A.M. Clear & calm. Working on garage door. 79 degrees at 1:45 P.M. leaving for Livingston Via E Helena at 2:00 P.M. Clear, windy.

May 23 (Saturday)
Dad in at 1:30 PM. Phil at the rototilling. at $3.00 hr we didn't tarry, both worked at it, finished about 2:35 PM so Phil took off no beer, no nothing. Temp 64 degrees at 2:45 P.M overcast, calm.
Susan Lucero and her "to be" came on a motorcycle about 4 P.M. Had a nice visit. They left about 5:15 P.M. (Dan Davey) 52 degrees at 10:30 P.M. broken clouds, calm

May 24 (Sunday)
42 degrees at 7 A.M. Clear, calm, a beautiful morning. Planted the potatoes, 4 rows of Bliss Triumph, 5 rows of Netted Gems. Was about to plant onions when Phil, Karen & children came. Made some coffee, they stayed until 6:30 P.M. so I started supper soup & left over spaghetti. 50 degrees at 10:30 P.M. Clear & calm.

May 25 (Monday)
44 degrees at 7 A.M. Clear, calm, everything is green, very pretty. Expect to finish planting the garden today. 70 degrees at 12 noon. planted the onions, peas and 1 row of corn this a.m. Planted 3 more rows of corn this P.M. 78 degrees at 4:30 P.M.

May 26 (Tuesday)
58 degrees at 7:30 AM. calm, some scattered clouds. Unloaded my winter ballast (rocks) out of the pickup. Turned our bed around, swept floor, shook out rugs. Planted some sunflowers, found the "varmints" had been into the peas & onions. spread some rat poison, hoping they will take it. I think the striped ground squirrels are the "varmints". Leaving for home, via Boulder at 12:30 P.M. 70 degrees, some wind, threatening clds, maybe it will rain.

June 6 (Saturday)
Dad in at 8:20 P.M. Clear calm, 68 degrees. By the time I got canvas over the truck load of particle board it was after nine so dined late. 62 degrees at 10:30 P.M.

June 7 (Sunday)
54 degrees at 7 A.M. Clear, calm. Saw the cottontail in the yard, he really took off. Ray, Lois & children came at 10:10 A.M. Lois brought fried chicken, macaroni-shrimp salad & cake. so had a good Sunday dinner, sandwiches, cake & coffee for supper. They left at 7:05 P.M. Had about 3 rain showers, the last one came down pretty hard. 56 degrees at 10 P.M. some scattered clds.

June 8 (Monday)
48 degrees at 7 AM Clr & calm. Had to empty the ashes from the stove, plum full.

Leaving for Rising Wolf at 11 A.M. Getting warm 68 degrees clear & calm DAD

June 22 (Monday)
Dad arrived at 2: P.M. cldy light wind, 90 degrees. Left Missoula at 9:45 A.M. stopped in Hln called Mac's hse - no answer. saw Ernie Anderson, George Vacanovich and Phil before coming out to the H.S Phil & Phil Jr came out about 6:45 P.M. Stayed until 9:15 P.M. Jr cut the lawn, looks a lot better. Went up & looked the garden over it looks pretty good. 73 degrees at 10 P.M.

June 23 (Tuesday)
60 degrees at 7 A.M. Calm, a few scattered clouds. 86 degrees at noon, calm a few scattered clouds. Working on getting the new floor started. 86 degrees at 6 P.M. cloudy & calm. Laid 3 sheets of particle board this afternoon had to level the floor from the cellar, heck of a job.
72 degrees at 10 P.M.

June 24 (Wednesday)
68 degrees at 7 AM cldy, some wind had a few drops of rain during the night.
Leaving about 3:50 P.M. am finishing 1st coat of gym seal on the new floor.

June 26 (Friday)
Dad arrived at 9:05 P.M. 77 degrees some overcast. Apparently there was a light shower this evening as the grass is still wet. some varmint ate the two creeper plants and the green ash plant, they looked so nice last Wednesday when I left. Starting to thunder & rain at 11 P.M. 66 degrees

June 27 (Saturday)
60 degrees at 7 AM clr. calm. 72 degrees at 12:30 P.M. 12:30 P.M., overcast, calm.
Phil, Karen Phil Jr Bruce & the baby came out about 3 PM, left about 6:10 P.M. It was started to rain lightning, and by 6:25 P.M. it was hailing like mad, 1/2 in size it hailed for about 15 minutes lightning sounded close by. Still raining at 6:50 P.M. 55 degrees.

June 28 (Sunday)
55 degrees at 7 AM. clear, light wind, a few showers during the night. plus some wind. 64 degrees at 12 noon broken clouds, calm.
Karen, Phil & children came out about 3:30 P.M. brought a watermelon and the Sunday paper. I was about finished with floor gym seal so "knocked" off for the afternoon the watermelon was good. They left for home about 6 P.M. Chicken noodles & corn for dinner this evening 60 degrees at 7 P.M.
56 degrees at 10:30 P.M. has been raining for awhile, quite hard.

June 29 (Monday)
51 degrees at 7:15 A.M. heavy overcast, calm.
Finished the floor painting and will be leaving for home about 12:45 P.M.

July 2 (Tuesday)
Mom & Dad in at 5 P.M. 77 degrees scattered clds, a light breeze.
Karen, Phil, Vaughn & the baby came out about 7:30 P.M. stayed until 11:30 P.M. Two games of pinochle, the women won both games.
58 degrees at 11:30 P.M. clear & calm.

July 3 (Wednesday)
Bright sunny morning, calm & 56 degrees
Phillip & Bruce came out 9:05 A.M. Ice nearly gone so they brot 5 # chunk. Duane, Lin Roger & Diamond arrived 1 P.M. St George family came 4:30 P.M. Stayed for supper, watermelon, etc. Left 9:40 P.M.

July 4 (Thursday)
7:30 A.M. clear, calm. Hot.
Hot cakes for breakfast.
Jeune, Scott, Sharon Lucero, with Randy, Tawnya, & David came about 12 noon. Brot picnic lunch with them Stayed til 6 P.M.
Phillip, Phillip Jr. & Bruce were here half an hour after the Tote goat. Were all going to see the fireworks at E. Helena.

July 5 (Friday)
54 degrees 8: A.M.
Cloudy in a.m.
Had 3 games Pinochle while Roger napped.
Phillip & Bruce brot ice out about 3:30. Didn't stay. Duane, Lin & Roger left 6:00 P.M.

Duane, Lin, Roger & the dog got here at 8:50 P.M. Mom & Dad in at 9:05 P.M. temp 70 degrees clear and calm
Real nice moon almost Full. Had 2 games Pinochle. Pa & Lin Winners.

July 18 (Saturday)
60 degrees at 7:30 AM clr & calm Hot cakes for breakfast. All set for a hot day. Phillip Jr. came in on the Tote-goat and then Phillip, Bruce, Gerald, Greg & Kevin in car at about 1:30 P.M. Left 5:30 P.M. Karen home on call.
Full moon 10:20 P.M. Beautiful. Played 2 games Pinochle. Duane & Mom won.

July 19 (Sunday)
Clear & calm. Warm. Very little breeze. Hot cakes for breakfast. Phillip & Bruce came with some ice about 9:45. Went back to Helena & returned at 12:30 with baby & all but Gerald. Lois, Ray & kids, with friend of Carla's came 10:30 A.M. Had new peas from garden in Livingston.
Winston & Leonora Dorr & 2 boys came at 1 P.M. We all ate dinner about 1:30. Had watermelon 4:30. Duane & Lin baby & dog left about 5 P.M. Smiths & Dorrs left 7 P.M.

The kids picked some wild gooseberries for me.

July 20 (Monday)
64 degrees at 8 AM clear & calm sposed to get to 92 degrees today 12:20 P.M. pa & ma leaving for Livingston. Hot as the dickens. 91 degrees at 12:20 P.M.

July 26 (Sunday)
The Smiths arrived at 2:30 pm - slowpokes. 81 degrees in the shade. Hot & clear. Will stay for a few days. Everyone was in bed by 10 o'clock. Forgot to say we pickled a kettle full of peas.

July 27 (Monday)
The Smiths got up about 9:00 AM - sleepyheads. 78 degrees at 11:00 AM We all went for a walk up the draw. Ray worked out by garage. Planes flying over from 4 o'clock on. forest service truck in about 6 o'clock. Two young men wondering how to get into fire on the next ridge. Ray showed them - walking. One came back at 7 o'clock. Ray went with him from 7 to 9. One tree on fire. guess there were 5 or 6 fires in the Helena area. It thundered & Lightninged during the night & Rained good from noon on. Clearing later in the afternoon but still cloudy.

July 28 (Tuesday)
We all got up earlier this morning about 8 o'clock. Ray took the kids fishing about 10:30 AM. Came back around noon. We all took a nap while the wind blew and rain poured down - about 4 PM. Drove into Helena on the Lump Gulch road. visited St. Georges. had coke & ice cream for Vaughn's birthday.

July 29 (Wednesday)
Ray got up early - 50 degrees at 6:30 AM. the rest of us slept until after 8 o'clock. Rained during the night, clear & sunshiny now. will head for GtFls this morning.

Dad in at 12:55 P.M. 69 degrees cloudy guess I missed Ray, Lois & family by about 2 hrs or so. Looks like perhaps a shower. Put a coat of paint enamel on the bedstead for the outer bedroom. Stew for supper. The garden looks good took a walk up the gulch after supper, a few dead trees have been blown over. 64 degrees at 9 P.M. calm scattered clds.

July 30 (Thursday)
50 degrees at 7:30 A.M., calm with a few scattered clouds. Did a few dirty jobs today, took the heater chimney down cleaned it. put a new can top on the cabin stove pipe patched the holes (woodpecker) on the east end of kitchen & removed the old sheating from the barn rood.
Phil, Bruce, Vaughn & the baby came out about 7:30 P.M. stayed until 9:15 P.M.

July 31 (Friday)
49 degrees at 7:30 A.M. Clear & calm. worked on the barn all day cleaning up boards hauling trash. hauled boards & plywood down for the roof sheeting. Have to reinforce one joist and level several others before putting the sheeting on. Phil, Karen & kids except Greg (at Joan's) came out about 9:45 P.M. stayed an hour, had coffee. 60 degrees at 10:30 P.M. clr & calm.

August 1 (Saturday)
50 degrees at 7 AM, clr, calm. Dad leaving at 10:30 AM 68 degrees, clr, & calm, (lite breeze)

August 6 (Thursday)
Mom & Dad drove in ay 7:55 P.M. 78 degrees. Had dinner at Townsend, tried to call Mac J. from E. Helena at 7:30 P.M. but no answer. 68 degrees at 11 P.M. clear & calm.

August 7 (Friday)
64 degrees at 7:30 A.M. Clr & calm Worked on the barn roof, temp 90 degrees at noon -
Duane, Lin & Roger came about6:30 P.M. We weren't expecting them until about 9 P.M.
Had a good rain about 11 P.M. Played 3 games Pinochle. Pa & Lin won all of them.

August 8 (Saturday)
64 degrees at 7:30 A.M. calm & hazy

Phillip, Gerald, Greg & Kevin came out about 4 P.M. Stayed til 6. Brot a generator for the jeep.

David Larson from Clancy & his wife came & asked if it would be o.k. to ride thru and go back down the power line. Each had a motorcycle, and had two youngsters along.

Dad in at 9 P.M. Left Livingston at 6 P.M. 69 degrees overcast & calm. Cattle are still in the place. 66 degrees at 10:30 P.M.
66 degrees at 10:15 P.M. sky is clear, no wind.

August 14 (Friday)
48 degrees at 7 A.M. Clr but hazy calm saw a young cottontail this a.m. pretty wild. 72 degrees at 12 noon, Put 1/3 of the sheeting on the barn roof this a.m.
66 degrees at 6 PM, the moon is up pretty big, sky is clear - calm
correction - hazy. 60 degrees at 10 P.M.

August 15 (Saturday)
48 degrees at 7 A.M. calm no clds but hazy, Saw the big cottontail this morning.
84 degrees at 1:30 P.M. Light breeze, clear. All day on the barn, little thing forever having to be done, have the roof finished on almost half of it, may finish it tomorrow. 82 degrees at 6 P.M. having turkey primavera & green beans for dinner, sounds good I'm hungry.

August 16 (Sunday)
56 degrees at 7:30 AM Clr & calm Hot! 93 degrees at 1:30 P.M. have a light breeze.
89 degrees at 6 P.M. Phil, Phil Jr Bruce & Vaughn came out about 5 P.M. left at 5:45 P.M. Phil Karen & the baby came out about 8 P.M. we had coffee and they left at 9:45 P.M.
78 degrees at 10 P.M. some clouds in the east also a wind but it is quite warm.

August 17 (Monday)
62 degrees at 7 A.M. A few scattered clouds, calm.
Bob Marks came in about 11:35 A.M. visited until 11:50 AM They are taking out the cattle today. 85 degrees at 12 noon, a few scattered clds, light wind. Leaving for Livingston via Boulder ay 12:15 P.M.

August 21 (Friday)
Mom & Dad in at 4:40 P.M. 84 degrees windy - hazy/smoke went down to the lower spring and cleaned some "crud" out of the tank. Will have to rod the pipe from the box to the tank, its plugged up.

August 22 (Saturday)
55 degrees at 7:30 A.M. clr & calm some what hazy. Worked on the barn roof this morning. had a tenant in the barn a mountain rat who is now buried adjacent to the barn.
84 degrees at 12:30 P.M. clear but smoke haze, light wind. 88 degrees at 6 P.M. clr, calm, & hazy

August 23 (Sunday)
55 degrees at 8 A.M. calm, w/a few scattered clds. Finally got the roof on the barn. (Happy days!) this a.m.
90 degrees at 1 P.M.
Karen, Phillip & boys came out about 6 P.M. We had supper (spaghetti, salad, etc.) Coffee & cake later. Kevin doesn't walk alone yet. They left at 9:30 P.M.
got real chilly during the nite.

August 24 (Monday)
48 degrees at 7:30 A.M. Clr & calm worked at the barn this a.m. 85 degrees at noon
Above 90 degrees at 2:30 PM. Pa worked at the barn. Leaving for Livingston

August 29 (Saturday)
51 degrees at 7 A.M. Clr & calm - some smoke haze in the air. Put another coat of gym seal on the kitchen - dining room floor. Phil, Phil Jr & Ben McMasters came out at 9:30 A.M. to put the generator and carburetor on the jeep. It runs pretty good, they left about 11:45 a.m. 76 degrees at 5 - P.M.
58 degrees at 10 P.M. clr, calm, lots of stars.
The jeep runs fairly good but hard to start, either timing, carburetor or distributor.

August 30 (Sunday)
47 degrees at 7 A.M. calm, a few scattered clds & hazy Put another coat of gym seal on the floor. Phil & boys came out about 2:30, stayed until about 4 P.M.
Ran the jeep awhile this p.m. when Phil was here, finally got it started but something needs fixing. 78 degrees at 5 P.M. sawed up the rest of the stove wood this P.M.
68 degrees at 9 P.M.

August 31 (Monday)
59 degrees at 7 A.M. calm, some scattered clouds.
Leaving at 10:45 A.M. temp 75 degrees. will look for chokecherries on the way home

September 4 (Friday)
Mom & dad came in at 4:15 P.M. overcast light wind, 70 degrees
Karen Phillip & boys came out about 7:40 stayed an hour and went home.

53 degrees at 7:30 A.M. heavy clouds & overcast, calm
Duane, Lin, Roger & dog came in 11:15 a.m. Still cool.
Smiths drove in 1:30 P.M. Sun shining part time. Calm. Temp 70 degrees.

Phillip & boys, also baby, came 2:30 P.M. Phillip went back to Helena after Karen about 5:30 P.M. They came out for supper. Left 9:15 P.M.

Men cleaned out the pipe at the lower spring in the P.M. Lots of water there.

September 6 (Sunday)
51 degrees 8 p.M. Clear sunshine

St George family came 12:45 We had dinner 2:30.

Smiths left for Gt Falls 6:45 P.M.

St Georges left 8 P.M.

Men sawed up some dead cottonwood at lower spring. also sawed down a couple old trees back of cliff.

2 games of Pinochle in evening. Each side won a game.

September 7 (Monday)
60 degrees overcast. Looks like rain.

Karen, Phillip & boys came 12:15. we had dinner about 3 P.M. Still cloudy.
St. Georges leaving 6 P.M. rain for about 30 min - 8:30 started raining heavier. drizzled all nite.

Played Pinochle. games about even.

September 8 (Tuesday)
50 degrees at 7:30 AM heavy overcast, calm - drizzle
Duane Lin, Roger & Dog left 10:40 a.m.

September 18 (Friday)
50 degrees at 8 A.M. Clr & calm
Drove up Warm Springs Creek but couldn't find the way over to McCleland Creek so came back to the H.S. Mac Johnson came out in the afternoon and stayed an hour or so.
53 degrees at 11:15 P.M. overcast

82 degrees - 3 - P.M.

50 degrees at 7:45 AM overcast, calm with light rain which started about 5:30 A.M.
Merle & Fern left for Butte about 10:30 A.M.
Phillip, Bruce, Kevin, Phillip Jr. came out from Helena 11: AM. left at 12:20 P.M. - still raining clouds low

October 4 (Sunday)
Karen, Phillip & boys here for a short time at noon. Temp. 79 degrees

October 9 (Friday)
Mom & Dad came in at 3:40 P.M. 46 degrees calm heavy overcast. Snow on the mtns. Emptied the ashes from the cook stove. Went down to the lower spring, everything O.K. Split some wood.
38 degrees at 10:30 P.M. has been raining for 2 hrs.

October 10 (Saturday)
33 degrees at 8 A.M. calm overcast starting to show signs of breaking up. about 1" of snow on the ground.
40 degrees at 12 noon, calm still some overcast.
Duane, Lin, Roger, Diamond & Vaughn came about 12:30 P.M. partly sunshine.

Phillip & Bruce came about 4: PM. Stayed til 5:30. Vaughn went home with them. Greg, Geral & Phillip Jr went on a 2 nite camping out trip at Park Lake (Boy Scout)

October 11 (Sunday)
43 degrees at 9 AM calm, heavy overcast. Cleared before noon sunshine most of the day.
Calm. 60 degrees 5 P.M.
Duane, Lin, Roger & Diamond left for Missoula at 5:15 P.M.

October 12 (Monday)
41 degrees at 8:30 A.M. heavy overcast. calm considerable rain during the night
44 degrees at 1 P.M. a little sunshine a little rain, s'posed to snow tonite so we are leaving for home ar 1:30 PM Mom & dad

October 25 (Sunday)
Dad in at 1:45 P.M. 40 degrees, calm, some clds. Karen, Phillip & the kids were having a venison fry w/marshmallows over a campfire Karen Phil & the kids left about 4:30 P.M.
36 degrees at 6 P.M. will be cold tonite
34 degrees at 10 P.M. starting to snow.

October 26 (Monday)
26 degrees at 7 A.M. some cloudiness, calm, trace of snow on the ground 38 degrees at 12 noon, lite wind scattered clouds. Made a trip to Boulder about the thief nothing has been done Mr. Paradise, sheriff, said he would go over to Johnson's Wednesday with the juvenile officer and order them to bring the boat back on a trailer to where they got it. The juvenile officer is to write me what is being or going to be done. Closed and wired up the gates into Ohio gulch and into the west "80".
